He serves as the Medical Director and Chief of Scoliosis and Spinal Deformity at Morristown Medical Center and the Atlantic Health System and is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, NYU Langone Health.
Educational Background & Scoliosis Research Experience
Dr. Jason Lowenstein completed his undergraduate degree in neuroscience at the University of Pennsylvania, where he graduated magna cum laude and was a Dean’s List Scholar. He attended the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, where he earned his medical degree. While in medical school, Dr. Lowenstein worked in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery’s Growth and Development Laboratory, performing gene therapy research to improve the delivery of growth factors and proteins used today for treating spinal disorders.
After completing his medical degree, Dr. Lowenstein pursued his residency in orthopedic surgery at Columbia University Medical Center / New York Presbyterian Hospital. Continuing his excellence in research, Dr. Lowenstein conducted hospital-sponsored studies to identify more effective treatments for spinal deformities, such as idiopathic scoliosis and spondylolisthesis.
To further refine his orthopedic surgery skills, Dr. Lowenstein completed a year-long comprehensive fellowship in adult and pediatric spine and scoliosis surgery at the Emory University Hospital / Emory Spine Center in Atlanta, Georgia.
Dr. Lowenstein focuses his practice in New Jersey and New York at Morristown Medical Center and NYU Langone Medical Center. His outstanding work in scoliosis and spinal deformity correction has earned Dr. Lowenstein his reputation as one of the nation’s premier scoliosis surgeons.
Areas of Surgical Expertise
Dr. Jason Lowenstein specializes in treating spinal deformities, such as adult and pediatric scoliosis, kyphosis, spondylolisthesis. Specifically, Dr. Lowenstein has extensive experience treating idiopathic, congenital, degenerative, and neuromuscular scoliosis. He has a particular interest in complex revision surgery for patients who have had previous spine surgery and have associated failed back syndrome and is a regional referral source for patients who have previously had spine surgery and require re-operation.
He utilizes vertebral body tethering (VBT) while treating patients with scoliosis as a flexible alternative to traditional fusion surgery and was the first surgeon in NJ to utilize the first and only FDA approved tether instrumentation system from Zimmer Biomet.
In addition, Dr. Lowenstein is an expert in minimally invasive spine surgery, performing endoscopic approaches for treating disc herniations of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine. He will also perform minimally invasive spinal instrumentation and fusion for scoliosis and kyphosis correction. Dr. Lowenstein also has a particular interest in treating patients who have severe or rare spinal deformities. As such, he routinely performs highly complex and customized procedures, including Pedicle Subtraction Osteotomies and Vertebral Column Resections for treatment of fixed and rigid spinal deformities. For this reason, Dr. Lowenstein serves as a regional referral source for patients who have been diagnosed with flatback syndrome from failed neck or back surgery and need revision spinal surgery.
Furthermore, Dr. Lowenstein is highly regarded as an expert in spinal motion preservation. When indicated, he will use motion preservation procedures such as total disc replacement or laminoplasty to avoid spinal fusion. However, when indicated, Dr. Lowenstein will adapt the spinal fusion process to the principles of minimally invasive spine surgery. In this manner, Dr. Lowenstein ensures that his patients can maximize their surgical outcomes while minimizing their recovery times and postsurgical pain. In addition, Dr. Lowenstein has earned vast experience in treating patients with spinal fractures, tumors of the spine, and spinal infections.
