Dr. Jason Lowenstein, MD: A Favorite Kids’ Doc
We at The Advanced Spine Center are proud to announce that one of our very own was recently awarded the New Jersey’s Favorite Kids’ Docs Award by New Jersey Family Magazine.
We would like to take a moment to congratulate Dr. Jason Lowenstein for his hard work and dedication to the children whom he serves. As an orthopedic spine surgeon who specializes in scoliosis and spinal deformities, Dr. Lowenstein faces many challenges, including ensuring that those who have complex spine conditions find lasting relief.
Dr. Lowenstein, however, takes these challenges in stride and provides a caring and compassionate bedside manner that is comforting to both the children and concerned parents whom he assists.
What is the Favorite Kids’ Docs Award?
Ten years ago, New Jersey Family Magazine readers proposed a great idea: What if parents could nominate doctors who gave exceptional care to their families? The idea stuck. As a result, the Favorite Kids’ Doc Award was born.
Each year, this award gained greater and greater popularity. After all, who is a more trusted source for doctor’s referrals than parents who have actually used the doctor? Other parents quickly took notice.
At its ten year anniversary, the New Jersey’s Favorite Kids’ Docs award is more than just an honor for doctors—it’s an invaluable resource for parents.
How Do Doctors Get Nominated?
As you may have guessed, it’s all about the parents. After all, parents were the ones who attended those appointments, interacted with the doctors, and worked through some very difficult times when their children needed extra help. When parents noticed a doctor who went above and beyond, they went to the New Jersey Family website and nominated that practitioner.
There’s no way to buy a spot on the list. Doctors must be nominated by the families whom they treated, which makes this award unlike many others.
The 2019 New Jersey Favorite Kids’ Doc Award at a Glance
This year 961 exceptional pediatric healthcare professionals were recognized. Their disciplines span the healthcare landscape including pediatric surgery, dentistry, occupational therapy, psychotherapy, and sports medicine (just to name a few).
Dr. Jason Lowenstein was one of five NJ spine surgeons who made the Favorite Kids’ Doc 2019 list. And, he was the only orthopedic surgeon recognized from the Morristown area.
What did the parents have to say about Dr. Lowenstein? Here are a few testimonials posted by parents on the New Jersey Family website:
“Dr. Jason is very passionate about his patients. He went above and beyond when he performed my daughter’s surgery on his daughter’s birthday. It was an extensive surgery that required us to be at the hospital early in the morning until late in the evening. Dr. Jason spent that day tending to my child. If that’s not exceptional, then I don’t know what is. He’s still very caring, even months after surgery. He checks on my daughter constantly. She loves him and his staff dearly. My entire family appreciates Dr. Jason so much.” ~Monique, East Orange
“Dr. Lowenstein showed so much patience and understanding with my daughter during the time when she was having surgery. For scoliosis, he prepared her for what was going to happen, what she’d be able to do and what she wouldn’t be able to do. She’s thriving now from the passion and understanding that he gave her.” ~Cheryl, Rockaway
As you can see, Dr. Lowenstein’s dedication has earned him the respect and admiration of many parents and children dealing with spinal disorders.
More About Dr. Lowenstein
Dr. Lowenstein is no stranger to receiving awards. In fact, New Jersey Monthly Magazine also recognized him as a 2019 Top Doctor. The publication awarded him their Top Doctor, Top Orthopedic Spine Surgeon, and Top Doctor for Children’s Health awards.
Dr. Lowenstein has also earned the respect of his fellow peers. Castle Connolly Medical Ltd publishes a variety of books including the “Top Doctors” series. The “Top Doctors” listed in the directory were nominated by other practitioners in the profession. Dr. Lowenstein earned the “Top Doctor” status, affirming that he was one of the best doctors for treating spinal issues and deformities.

Dr. Lowenstein graduated with honors from the University of Pennsylvania, majoring in neuroscience. He received his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. As an orthopedic surgeon for over 13 years, Dr. Lowenstein specializes in the treatment of spinal deformities including scoliosis, spondylolisthesis, and kyphosis. He also likes the challenge of helping patients who require complex revision surgery due to failed back syndrome.
Dr. Lowenstein favors a collaborative approach with patients and families. He starts by focusing on conservative treatments. If surgery is necessary, he explains the risks, rewards, and surgical processes with families so that they clearly understand outcomes and expectations.
“I want,” he tells New Jersey Family Magazine, “children and families to play an active role in the treatment process.” As a father of three, he understands just how important a family’s role is in their child’s treatment.
